We are constantly under attack for the apparent unfairness of some classes which competitors enter and for which they are, in fact, over-qualified, i.e. a Grade VI violinist entering a Grade IV class. This is especially a problem in duet classes where it is not always easy to find two performers of equal standard. We have sought advice from the British and International Federation of Festivals and their response leads us to suggest the following wording indicating the Grade of class: (this example is given for Grade VI) " This is a class for performers of any age who are preparing to take Grade VI or working on music at the standard set for Grade VI by the ABRSM (or equivalent). Where other standards of pieces are presented, they will be adjudicated but not marked. Please note the choice need not be a piece of music set for an examination". From 2012, all the instrumental classes have been standardised into grades and time limits. PRE GRADE 1; time 2 minutes GRADES 1 & 2; time 2 minutes GRADES 3 & 4; time 3 minutes GRADES 5 & 6; time 5 minutes GRADE 7; time 8 minutes ADVANCED & RECITAL: time 8 - 12 minutes RECORDER ENSEMBLES: KEY STAGE 1 (Up to 2 minutes of Pre-Grade and Grades 1 & 2 combined) KEY STAGE 2 (Combination of Key Stages 1 & 2 combined; up to 5 minutes of all grades up to Grade 6) KEY STAGE 3 & ABOVE: (Up to 12 minutes for Grades 7 and above) ALL DETAILS WILL BE SHOWN IN THE 2012 SYLLABUS |

NEW MUSIC CLASSES FOR 2012 There will be a composition class for musicians of all ages using any instrument, to perform a piece of music which they have written themselves. We are also introducing a "Latecomers" class for any newcomer to instrument-playing over the age of 50 who "fancies having a go at a Festival but has never plucked up the courage". In the Vocal Section there will be a class for a Comedy Song other than Gilbert & Sullivan which is covered in its own class. The Anniversary class this year will be John Ireland (50th anniversary of his death) or Edward German (150 anniversary of his birth). The Victorian Parlour Song is to be renamed "Parlour Song" to allow songs up to 1914. To avoid any confusion about short performances where we currently state that a performance is expected to last at least 50% of the time limit; we will, in future, allow adjuducators to decide whether the performance was sufficiently long to allow them to make a fair judgement. We are very sorry about the difficulty this caused last year and hope we won't have this problem again. In the Choral Section we are introducing a Choral Performance Class for both the Youth and Adult Choirs. This will be called "Choral Performance in a Theatrical Style" and we hope that this will overcome the difficulty of judging static and "performing" choirs together. Movement will be permitted although props and costumes are unnecessary and will not be judged. We think that this will encourage groups of all standards to feel more relaxed and free to show off their own thing! In the past, we have made it difficult for members of junior choirs to participate in solo instrumental classes on the same day but in a different location. If any competitor thinks they may be affected by this, please tell us on your Entry Form and we will do out best to make sure you can take part in all your selected classes. This applies to all those entering the Festival in any Section and we shall do our utmost when we work out the timing. Details of all these classes will be in the Syllabus available from the Festival Office. |
THE DOREEN MERRIFIELD SCHOLARSHIP An additional bursary in memory of Doreen Merrifield will be awarded in 2012 again for a student aged between 11 and 17 years to attend the European Youth Summer School at Haileybury College in Hertford following the success of this award in 2011. The Speech & Drama Summer course will not be taking place during 2012 and so the Committee are offering two places to receive this award. One place will be for a vocalist and the other for an instrumentalist. The course will take place between the 29 July and 4 August (but these dates will need confirming) and the winning competitors will be selected by the Adjudicator. |
